Default engine feels like its quitting

i have a 98 gsr, and when i try to take it up to redline, the engine wont go past 6500 rpm. everything seems to go fine and it feels like its pulling well, but once it hits 6500 rpm it gives up and doesnt wanna go any further. the two possible causes i've heard are the distributor or a clogged fuel filter. is there anything else i should look for? my engine has about 59K miles on it and i'm slowly getting all the required maintenance done to it. i would really like to resolve the problem myself instead of shelling out a rediculous amount of money to have some shop diagnose the problem for me, but if worse comes to worse, i guess thats what it might come down to. any and all help would be appreciated. TIA.

possibly vtec solenoid attached to the side of the head/block. Could be the problem. Also, maybe ecu. You can reset the ecu by doing something like leaving the battery unhooked for 30 seconds then turning the car on and letting it idle for like 10 minutes. I think thats how its done. anyways, I would check vtec solenoid first.

what should i look for on the vtec solenoid? i've reset the ecu possibly 3 times since this problem showed up a couple months ago, but it didnt solve anything. i'll try again later today when i get home, and we'll see what happens.

basically, just let the car warm up. take it around the block once. After that, the vtec solenoid should be warmed up and ready to kick in vtec. If it doesn't kick in after the car warms up, then its probably bad.

my friends car did the same thing, after we switched out distributor with another good one it ran fine. His was shutting off before it reached redline. We thought it was his chipped ecu but after testing the car with another stock ecu it still shut off. hope this helps.

by switching distributors, do you mean the whole distributor or just replacing the cap and rotor?
