usually it means the car is running really rich. the excess gasoline detonates in the exhaust causing backfire.

Ignition timing seemed to effect backfiring on my '84 Wagon. Advancing it reduced backfiring.

is it just a pop pop pop backfire or is it a loud bang that sounds like a shotgun blast?

i have that exact same problem, does it have to do with a restricitve exhaust setup?

It's actually the opposite, the more free-flow the system is the more likely you're able to backfire. Ever since I've taken off my silencer last weekend, I've been getting really mean backfires.

it could also be from your cam timing if you have adj. cam gears..my best friend has some on his car..we retarded the exhaust cam gear 2 deg. and it fixed it..it could also be from a free flowing exhaust...its just the exhaust gasses going through the exhaust..as long as its not popping like a backfire..i wouldnt really worry about it..you can check the spark plugs and see if its running rich..if it is...you may want to either advance timing on your engine..or get a Fuel Pressure Regulator to help this problem
