I have a 96 accord VTEC and i was wondering what kinda oil other people use in there honda's. I have always used fram filter and castrol syntec 10w40. is there any other better brands out there that i can use or that anyone would recomend.
Also i want to do my transmission fluids cause i think i am down to a table spoon of oil so it is due time lol. What kinda trans oil should i use, rather what is the best treatmant that i can do for my transmission when i fill it and drain. is slick 50 a good thing to put in ur tranny? i could really use some info on this situation i am kinda clueless. much appreciated on some advice and some help in this situation thanks

I run Honda filters and 10w30 Mobil 1 synthetic. I run Honda MTF. You shouldn't need to use any additives in your engine oil or tranny fluid.

I use Valvoline Maxlife 10w30. Works well for my 162k engine.

Phat8186,
I have Mobil 1 in my CRX. My Civic beater also has Mobil 1 in it at the moment because it's all I had on the shelf when it's last oil change was due.
Now, my wife's 1996 Civic started to develop that piston slap noise around 80k or so. I initially had good luck with the Valvoline MaxLife using their original formulation. That quieted the noise down for a bit. Then, Valvoline changed their formula to decrease the amount of molybdenum disulfide in the mix...imagine, then noise came back. On the recommendation of a friend who does extensive oil research, I've tried PennZoil High Mileage formula in her car. That did the trick for the first 2500 miles on this change. Now, she's due again pretty soon, but it seems that the adative package is all used up...prolly because I was running MaxLife for so long. In any case, she'll get more of that soon and I should be able to get more than 3 grand out of an oil change again.
As far as tranny fluid, I use RedLine MTL. My Civic is due for a change and I'm prolly going to try the Honda MTF, just because I haven't used it and it's about $3 cheaper a quart. I don't trust the new SL grade oils in a tranny...prolly too slippery for the synchros.
Don't run any slick50 in your oil and especially not your tranny. For the tranny, try MTF or MTL. For motor oil, if you do have piston slap, get something with a good percentage of moly, RedLine, Mobil1, Shaeffers, PennZoil High Mileage...If not, and cost is no object, go with RedLine. If cost is an object, Castrol GTX. Don't waste your money on Syntec.

SynTec isn't a bad oil, it's pretty good. But considering it's made from hydrocracked type III (petroleum) feedstocks, it should be lots cheaper than Mobil-1 which is made from type IV (PAO).

Since it's about the same price, I'd use Mobil-1 instead. I use that in my Saab 'cause it's turbocharged. Castrol GTX in the N/A Hondas.

Ummmm well, its been awhile so maybe? I don't hang out on bobistheoilguy all the time...

Neither Mobil-1 or SynTec really say on their own labeling or their own websites, so you gotta decide whether to trust what you hear from other sources. (Including whether you should believe me.)

I use Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 in my integra. I noticed alot of people use 10w-30. I know it probably doesnt make a big difference between the two, but dont honda's come with 5w-30 from the factory, and isnt it recommended also? I'm just basing this on what I learned in school. They say when a auto co. recommends a specific type of oil, its because of the little pores or oil passages in the engine, and that if the oil used is to thick, than the oil would not pass through as smoothly, therefore the engine/engine parts would not be lubricated as well. Is this true? And what is the Mobil 0w-40 for...an employee at the store told its to be used with new cars...(sure)
