The MES connector gets shorted when you want to reset the SRS light, so I doubt you could have damaged it.

I'm looking all over and all points are pointing to the one connector that I was messing with... it's possible that the paper clip I used was coated in something and was non-conductive. I'm going to try it again with something that I'm sure is conductive... question, is there possibly any damage to just having done what I did? Essentially what I did then is just unplug the connector and didn't short it (I'm assuming) is that damaging at all?

Yup. Right after I was messing with it. Everything seems to be ok.

I'm not sure if this applies to all Preludes, but it might be of some use:

In order to get the code you'll need to find the service connector. On the 5th Gens it's on the right hand side of the centre console underneath a carpeted panel that just pops right out. The connector looks like a telephone connector and is plugged into a blue plastic piece that just serves as a holder. Unplug it and you'll see that it has two sockets in it that lead to two wires.
