Do you get much more power out of advanced timing? Does it hurt the engine in the process?

The power gains aren't great but they're still there. It won't hurt the engine but you will have to use high-octane fuel unless you really want to hurt your engine

so who was responsible for the timing being off? or was it just like that? cause if the belt was on and then the timing got off the only way thats possible is if it jumps a tooth but obviously that didnt happen since you say its running fine now after being on time.....

Gotta be careful with that cam timing, especially if go with an aftermarket cam. Customer I just did a head for just destroyed his block and majorly damaged his head because the valves were clipping each other, broke a valve and sent it through the piston and split the cylinder in two. Skunk2 stage 2 cams and gears and I have the sneaking suspicion they were not set right. Got the head set up on another block now to recreate it and see what happened but with that big Vtec lobe you have to be careful during split overlap that the valves aren't too close to each other.

Another thing to be careful with on some of these bigger cams is oversized valves. Talk to your cam manufacturer before going with oversized valves, as they can catch on each other and cause this same problem. In fact, on Skunk2's page they specifically advise against oversized valves with stage 2 or 3 cams.
