Those kits use a FMU because its cheap and it will seem to work, for a while at least. It won't work well. Those companies either don't have the time or the commitment to produce their own piggyback/standalone EMS. Greddy's Emanage isn't bad but with all the necessary upgrades it's expensive, and I know Edelbrock's kit comes with some kind of piggyback but I don't know how good it is.

Uberdata or Crome are good, free alternatives to standalones like the AEM EMS, etc... Find someone in your area who can tune the car and knows these systems. Usually its just regular guys who know what they're doing from experience.

You are asking people for advice on turbos since you say you never gone down that road before, yet you complain when people tell you not to use an FMU. People are telling you here from EXPERIENCE not to use it where as you are going by what you have read. I highly suggest you listen to them if you don't want to blow up your engine. Remember a stock engine is not designed for boost so you should take every precaution to not damage it, even at a lowly 6-7 psi.

I complain because everyone tells me to use Chrome or Uberdata, etc., and I don't need to. I guess I'll just stop asking questions because I get the same response from everyone, USE UBERDATA. My bro is a DSM guy (has VR4, had 2 talons), he knows all about datalogging and such, but I'm not looking to go down that road. I'd rather have my car work relaibly than blow it up cause everyone wants me to run 10psi and 300whp. Like I said car was fast as hell anyway w/out turbo. If the $4000 Revhard kits etc. don't come with UBERDATA, and they seem to work just fine for their intended applications, why does everyone suggest these tuning programs, which are known to have bugs, just so I can "run 10psi safely"? I don't wanna run 10psi, just what is intended to be run with the FMU, which is 7psi max. I'm an Engineer, so I know that stock Honda engines, with open deck cooling chambers and all aluminum construction cannot with stand high boost levels, or high running temperatures. I also understand that the original FMU was designed by Vortech, and is only designed to be used up to 7psi absolute max, because at this level the fuel pressure is [(7*12)+40)psi = 124psi which is very high, any higher and the injectors may not fire reliably, hence ruined engine. The FMU provides a LINEAR rate of increasing fuel pressure, so I know it's limitations. So, I guess my only option is to follow what the Revhard/DRAG kits have supplied, and that is an FMU and a high-flow fuel pump, and have more fuel rather than less. I'm not going to boost more than 6psi anyway. The car has almost 200 miles on it and it works perfectly, VTEC also works, although when I go up high I keep boost low to about 3psi. I appreciate all the help U guys give me, could do without the uninformative replies, but thanks. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Mike B

ok buddy, run ur piece of shit FMU. and when u make a thread that u blew ur motor, ill laugh at you. if u have never BUILT a turbo car, than why r u saying u know everything. ive seen cars blow at 6psi weith an fmu. just get crome pro, then get a wideband and the car will self tune and u wont have to wine about the car needed tuned u ass

lol this is great.

first off. Inline pro ran FMU, 450cc injectors, afc, missing link and 255lph pump on their cars for years. not timing devices at all and had cars in the mid 10 second range. I know there are a few integra 4 doors runnin low 11's on that set up daily driven.

as for the head gasket again I am laughing. yes it modifies the quench on the motor and can be bad but my car NEVER detonated on that set up ever and that is 17psi on stock ITR internals which are about where he is compression wise. My compression was 9.6:1 with that head gasket and the car ran high 12's with AC and PS on stock internals and street tires for over 2 years. on top of that when we pulled the motor apart the pistons and rods were all still perfect even at 92k miles.

point is that Hondata and neptune are better than a FMU and can be tuned better but uberdata is not. infact find a tuner willing to risk his rep by taking a chance with uberdata.

again it is totally possible to make 400-450whp on stock honda internals with that head gasket. I would not daily drive the car but it is possible and if you treat it right it will last for a reasonable amount of time.

here are some tips for tuning with the set up I said above
1. keep it under 14psi on pump gas
2. do not dial AFC back past 35-39% because it will begin to show major changes in ignition timing
3. Do not tune on some half ass AF gauge. get a real wideband. tune the motor for 11:1-11.5:1 af ratio because of the advanced timing from the AFC.

Like I said before save if you have the cash get hondata. that is the way to go and the drivablity of my car with hondata is amazing. no matter what get that head gasket. compression has very little to do with turbo spool and is more based on gearing because boost is just a byproduct of load and compression has nothing to do with load but gearing does.

disclaimer- if you blow up your motor it isn't my fault or the FMU's it is the fact you did a bad job of tuning and didn't take care of the car.

PS- if your bro had a "hooked up" galant vr4 you would think he would tell you what you need to know and not rely on honda-acura.net. tell him if he wants to go fast to order some parts from slowboy racing or garagedefeat.com

acutally the FMU won't make that much presure because the fuel pump can't pump enough to make that presure. how do you limit boost to 3psi? you CANNOT set boost at a lower value than the wastegate is set at and I don't know any gate internal or external that will only have a 3psi spring.

i ESPECIALLY like that disclamer because you CAN"T fucking tune with an fmu. its a straight up ratio. lol. the only way you CAN do a bad job at tuning is by installing it in the first place. all you can do pretty much is play with your dizzy timing

please don't make me bust out about 1,000 people that are running uberdata aswell as numerous professional tuners. just accept the fact that its very competative with hondata

people are dumb. there seems to haver been a flood of armchair mechanicsaround here lately that just post shit about what they have read or what "tons f others" have done. i have first hand experience with fmu and uberdata. and uberdata works. an fmu will work, butit will fuck ur car up like no other. and u dont need a missing link. just get injectors, have ur ecuchipped by someone if u dont wanna go thru the hassle again and run either uberdata or crome

the afc allows you to tune and I had a cartech FMU so you can dial the ratio in on it. it is just like a FPR adjustment wise from 2:1-12:1.

whatever stay cheap keep using someones homemade software and not running the #'s
