Default 87 CRX with d16a1 speedo???

Allright guys I was wondering if any of you would know if there are any options I would have for a higher MPH speedo for my CRX? I got my d16a1 in and it easily maxes out the 120 mark!! I heard somewhere about somthing like a 140 MPH on an older CRX?? Anyone know what year and if it bolts up??? Can I get it aftermarket? TIA

Cmon is this a dumb question?? Has no one else needed a higher mph speedo?? How about taking a gauge and cable out of a newer car would that work?

Why do you need a speedo that goes above 100 mph? If your doing that on a public street, I'm really hoping you don't live anywhere near me or anybody I know and if your on a track, who cares what the speedo says, as long as the tach is reliable.

I'm not preaching from a soapbox (but this forum does seriously frown on illegal street activities) and I won't deny I've driven recklessly and raced in the past and I'm lucky that I never got caught or killed myself or someone else. I don't know all the facts, but as I stated before, the only reason for a speedo is to obay posted speed limits, it serves no purpose in a real motorsports competition. The reason your speedo reads to the speed it does is becuase the car is legally allowed to drive those speeds in other parts of the world, but only in places where the road conditions and other factors meet certain standards. I don't think I'm jumping on you for what you posted or being unreasonable, and I would never lock a thread just because I don't agree with someone, I'm just telling you that what your doing is dangerous. Regardless of the motor and modifications, driving an 18 year old 4 cylinder economy car at over 140 mph is just plain dangerous and you could potentially kill yourself or someone else. A tire blowout, a mechanical failure or a simply a bad change in road conditions (puddle, gravel, dirt, oil) are going to be much harder to compenstate or recover from at those speeds.

As for your question, most people say OE speedo's don't read accurately after 100 mph, but I've heard an explanation why. I guess the tranny could accellerate beyond a speed the sensor can reliably read but that seems unlikely. I don't believe you can simply swap a sensor and cable into your tranny from another car and have it work without issues but your cable drive unit should control any Honda cable driven dash (specificaly I thinking older 1st or 2nd gen Integra's). Honestly though, I can't think of any real reason to have a speedo that reads beyond 100 mph though.

Another option that might work is to use a JDM speedo that reads in KPH and convert it to read MPH. I know it's possible using a JDM S13 (180SX/Silvia) cluster that reads to 180 KPH, solder in a 12k ohm resister in the right place and the guage will then read to 180 MPH (240's also use an electric speed sensor, not cable though). I have a JDM cluster from my clip and thought about doing it but there isn't really a ponit and I've also heard it's much harder to gauge you speed as a small change in the needles location is a much larger difference in actual speed. I'm keeping my OE speedo but using the JDM tach as it's redline reflect the new engine and my old one won't work with the new engine anyway.
