I heard that a modernish car (90s) will compensate for the loss in accessory power by turning the pulleys faster, thereby negating any added benefit. Anyone else heard that?

I don't know why they don't just make light aluminum pulleys that are the same size as stock.

think about how the pulleys are tuned... by the crank. It's not as if your alternator will mystically turn faster just because it's not generating the power it should... h:

Being that it's belt driven I doubt they are going to spin faster then the belt.

It does sound weird... maybe it was like the alternator increases its output independently of the speed?

well dosent the size of the pulley change the speed and the amount force needed to move it, take a bike and break down the different tires, thin light wieght tires turn faster more easier than chucky, a large road tire on bikes takes more to start it going but also makes it easier to spin at high speeds but a small wheel the power spinning it has to work harder to make it spin at high speed but has better low speed response (also take into account the different gears on the bike, aerodynamices, size on rider, etc...) i think there is a lot of variables that come into acount on this so untill i see a dyno chart that proves any major gain i think its a waste of cash and gas is expensive now... tear (armstrong pyhsics here)

If that were the case, why would it even need to be hooked up to the crank anyway?

The alternator and all other accessories run directly from the crank and have no other outside force that powers them besides the crank. If the pulley is larger, the alternator is spinning slower, thus a marked drop in voltage is seen.

www.howstuffworks.com will give you the rundown on how these accessories work and the pulley size is relative to their functionality.

I guess if 1-3 whp is worth frying your alternator over, by all means, go for it.

You are thinking of adjustable cam gears. Accessory belt pulleys are completely different and they don't need to be tuned.

Just slap them on and watch your alternator fry.

AEM pulleys dont do anything because the main power adding pulley is the crank pulley which AEM doesn't make...if you wanted power from a pulley set you should have gone with UR
