If that were the case, why would it even need to be hooked up to the crank anyway?
The alternator and all other accessories run directly from the crank and have no other outside force that powers them besides the crank. If the pulley is larger, the alternator is spinning slower, thus a marked drop in voltage is seen.
www.howstuffworks.com will give you the rundown on how these accessories work and the pulley size is relative to their functionality.
I guess if 1-3 whp is worth frying your alternator over, by all means, go for it.
