Default 97 civic p0170 & p0171 (fuel injectors?)

About a month ago my car had the check engine light come on, so I took it to Honda. They ran a diagnostic and told me the code could either mean i needed the valves adjusted, or the fuel injectors replaced. I elected to have the valves adjusted first because it was alot cheaper. (the valve work was $180 and the fuel injection work was estimated to be ~$700!)

Now the light has come back on, and I just took it to autozone to get the codes (just to make sure it was the same one). Called Honda to verify that it is, here are the codes:

P0170 Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 1)
P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1)

Do you guys think this means the fuel injectors need to be replaced? I do notice the car seems slugish and is getting ~16-18 mpg. Also, would anyone be kind enough to point me in the right direction to getting started (I'm a beginner to this kind of work)

Thanks in advance for reading the long message and helping!

It means that you're running lean and the ecu tried to richen the fuel trim but was unsuccessful. I would suspect a lazy O2 that is stuck in lean condition. There are so many problems that need to be verify before concluding anything. If the Honda you took to said it either mean a valve adjustment or new injectors they are not doing there diagnostics properly. They should have pinpointed the problem and not give you two possibilities. Good luck.

Default Same Problem in 1998 Civic DX

I am getting the same P0171 code from my 1998 Honda Civic DX. I just replaced the plugs and O2 sensor. Both are easy to replace yourself. I'll let you know if this has solved my problem.
