Default Fun with Clutches

Well, pulled the engine from my car today expecting to rebuild a transmission. Instead, my transmission is in great shape still from it's rebuild a year ago, and my clutch now looks like this:

ClutchMasters said:
Downshifting on a regular basis is probably what caused the hub to fail
Lovely considering they consider this a competition clutch, and my normal driving style includes downshifting for corners.

I'm waiting for a call back from Unorthodox Racing. If this is what I get with a sprung hub, I won't get another :fawk:

Ouch! Did that just happen? How was the car acting with a destroyed clutch?

This actually happened 3 months ago and today was the first opportunity I'd had to work on it. Talk about busy...

The car was undrivable, luckily I have a reliable secondary. When it let go, it was like someone jerked my tranny out of gear, and it happened while pulling on to a notoriously high traffic road

Needless to say I'm not happy with what CM had to say about the situation, and even less happy with their lack of effort to do anything to keep me as a customer. What I will be doing though is getting an unsprung kevlar disk from Unorthodox Racing once they get back to me in the morning with a price quote, especially since the guy I talked to agreed with me that an unsprung hub would fit my application better, and that a kevlar faced disk is a nice soft engagement for the street, even with an unsprung hub.

My pressure plate is balanced to my engine, and in great shape still, and the flywheel still has visible machining marks,

so I'm ready to put a new disk in and get back to driving it

Yep, that clutch saw about 8k miles over about 8 months. The friction material is still in good shape, but the hub and mounting methods in the center gave up due to my roadracing driving style :dunno: I'll readily admit I downshift for stopping and for corner turn-ins, but this was "supposed" to be a competition clutch and CM doesn't want to say anything except "well that's what happens" basically. At least the guy at UR listened to my driving habits and what the car is used for and was able to tell me that I would likely destroy any sprung hub disk I put back in it. Now I'm just waiting on a quote for an unsprung kevlar disk from them. I really love how gentle the kevlar is to the pressure plate and flywheel, and it holds great, I just wish CM had stronger stuff for their sprung hubs. The metal that's ripped out inside the friction material is like some thin spring steel, which of course you can't see when it's in one piece like you'd expect it to stay...

Well, I just got off the phone with UR. $330 for the disk, which will work with my pressure plate and all that jazz. A full kit is $539. I should be here by friday, guess I need to work my ass off to pay the credit card.

Yep, that's exactly what happened, it just broke.

But that's ok, UR is building me a custom unsprung hub kevlar disk that should be much stronger, I'll be sure to give everyone the skinny on it when it gets here.

Downshifting does that ??!!!?? That's a load of BULL!!

I rarely stop without downshifting a few times, and especially into corners... but I swapped trannys last week with the intent of finding a messed up clutch, but it was almost new 7.5 mm thick new is 8.1 to 8.8 by Honda specs... and I've driven 16k hard on it...

Keep giving clutch masters shiit!! They should be able to build a higher quality clutch, and if not, should an least warantee that one...

I'm fumed cuz of this...
