if you can, snag an old laptop. no dc conversion problems (use a regular dc-dc car adaptor for the laptop)...much smaller...much less heat issues...laptops are better able to handle shock/vibration.

i know you have the desktop already, but if you see a laptop around, grab it or maybe trade the desktop + some cash for it. toss a 802.11 pcmcia in it, and it will make everything easier!

I'm involved in a similar project, that is I want to install a computer in my car, but mainly for navigation purposes.

I am using a 7'' LCD with touch screen features and a VGA port which eliminates the need to convert the computer screen to TV signal, and it also eliminates the use of a mouse, keyboard, or remote. Go to www.xenarc.com if you're interested. It's a bit expensive, but it's worth it.

The problem I have is how to shut down the computer automatically without getting "The computer was not shut down properly. . ." message when I turn the key off. I heard that a UPS will do the trick, but I also heard that it will consume so much power that the car battery won't ' last long.

Any ideas?

i'm not sure where you guys live, but you must remember that certain computer components are prone to failure under extreme weather conditions. ie: 150+ in your car parked outside during the summer or -20 during the winter. on top of all that you must also remember normal desktop components are made to just sit on the desktop and not absorb the vibrations of a car ride. your best bet is to get an old laptop since they are somewhat immune to a mobile enviroment and come in such a small form factor. it will be easier to mount it under the seat or even in your glove box for easy cd/dvd-rom access. okay theres my 2 cents.

forget the heat.

What about the cold

vibration

then you have the HOT,

then you turn on your A/C

then you get the moisture from the A/C on the hot chips

then you shut off your car, and it gets super hot in the car again...

---- I dont know...

You turn a computer on it's side in the house and the hard drive starts to clank and fail.

Imagine going over railroad tracks?

I'm assuming that I'm going to need a video card that has RCA or S-Video outputs so that I can run video from the computer to the screen up in the dashboard.

Two questions:

1) What kind of video card would you reccommend?
2) What kind and/or brand of monitor?

Also, I have a wireless network in my house and I'm going to install a wireless card in the civic so that when I pull into the garage I can download songs overnight from Kazza, and they'll be in my ride. Is that not the coolest thing?
I wouldn't download from KAZZA anymore they are putting out low suits on mostly everyone, if i were u i would watch out just my .02 cents.
