i got a 97 accord coupe, and recently i added a new kenwood head unit. however, when i turn the volume up to about 24 the speakers start skipping. is this because my head unit is too powerful for the spearkers? and if so, should i just get new 6 by 9's or just get an amp?

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

 

toss the stock speakers and invest in a good set.

 

Get some new 6X9's, you might be happy with the power the deck gives them and tehn if you're not you can always get an amp later

 

first what do you mean by skippping? second the head unit is probably only putting out maybe half what it says cleanly. They rate them with so much distortion its not even usable. If you really want good highs buy a nice small amp to power them. BIG DIFFERENCE!!!! Even with stock speakers.

 

skipping eh??? Sounds more like distortion. Replace the stock seakers and get an amp for them...

 

You should replace your speakers ASAP, I'm a HUGE boston acoustics fan. They're very high & bright, if you want something a bit bassier, go with JLs.

 

I agree with ur31337, if you do decide to get some new 6x9s, boston makes some great 3ways for under 150. Oh by the way, the problem probably isn't that the deck is giving the speakers too much power (most decks dont produce half the power/channel as they say they do). It's just that at higher volumes, the speakers probably get distorted b/c there's not enough power to push them at louder volumes... so an amp would be a solution also, but like i said, i would reccomend some new bostons first

 

Xtant, JL or Zapco amps would run the bostons well enough

 

Agreed. Stock speakers are just poor quality paper cones with bad foam surrounds. Typically when people install an aftermarket deck the next thing to go is the speakers, because the design on them is meant to be powered by the weak 10 watt per channel deck in there before.
