Default 96 Accord LX: Speaker Upgrade

I have the JVC KD-G300 head unit installed but I am looking to replace the factory speakers. I have found that the front speakers are 6 1/2" (not sure if the speaker has to be shallow or not) but for the rear, some websites say 6"x9"and others say 6 1/2". I haven't gotten a chance to look at the speakers themselves so I figured I would ask here.

Also, could anyone recommend a pair of speakers for front and rear that would be inexpensive but great quality? I'd rather not shell out money for an amp or sub, so they have to have bass and must be able to run off my JVC head unit.

Thanks,
Chris

if you're talking about the sedan (I dunno about the coupe), the front speakers are shallow 6-1/2's and the rear deck speakers are 6x9's. I bought shallow-mount infinity reference 6002si's that sound great. I'm not sure if shallow 6.5's are completely necessary since I had a little room to spare with those, but I wouldn't get the deepest 6.5's either.
If you want excellent, inexpensive 6x9's get the infinity reference 9603i. Crutchfield's got both on sale now.
Both pairs sounded good running off a sony HU but if you amp them they'll sound incredible. And all for a combined $160. Happy hunting!

Yea, its the sedan.

I see the Reference 6002si's on the site, but for the reference 9603i's, it says it wont fit...any ideas?

weird...I have the exact same speakers and they replaced the POS pioneer 6x9's that were in there before. there was plenty of room to spare below the magnet, and I doubt that there is any difference between your '96 and my '97 so you are safe to go with those.
I tried putting my '97 in the vehicle selector and yes, it tells me it won't fit, but I walk out to my car and see the 6x9's in there with room to spare so I guess that would be the "vehicle selector" you can trust more, right?
Go for it, I see absolutely no reason they shouldn't fit.

If you decide to buy those speakers from crutchfield (which you should, the price is definitely right), they send you a "mastersheet" for free for the Accord that basically tells you exactly how to remove the door panel (necessary to install the front speakers) and install them, and then it gives you instructions for the rear deck installation as well. Each step is well-documented and if you know how to use a phillips head screwdriver, the installation is cake. keep me updated..

I got the 6 1/2" speakers today and installed them, they sound AMAZING!! Great recommendation. Installation was cake! Can't wait to get the rear deck speakers (probably going to have to wait a few weeks to save up some money for them). 65 bucks shipped for the fronts was a great deal and the rears will only be like 105 shipped...great buy. Between removing the old speakers (yuck) and installing the new one was a little vague because the speaker instructions were shitty (the mastersheet was good, but didn't go into detail on installing the exact speaker because it is general enough to work for every pair) but I figured it out after a few minutes.

wow i have an accord 97 and im bout to do pretty much the same as you are... infinity reference 6000si's in the front , 9063i in the back. im acually crimping the wires to my harness as we speak (i bought the alpine 9847 along w/ the 6000si's).

was it hard taking out the front door panels? how many clips r there? cruthfield's maser sheet is really vague on that.

regarding the 9063i's not fitting in the back, i asked another person who installed 9063i's in his 96 accord , n he said the reason y crutchfield says it doesn't fit is cuz the tweeters stick up a lil, causing the stock grills to touch the tweeters. but he said you can loosen one of the screws on the stock grills to lift it up to prevent this. im gonna b ordering the 9063i's and an multi amp after i install my head unit and front speakers tmrw. lemme know if u have any questions... dukwei@yahoo.com

There are quite a few clips keeping the door panel attached to the door. here's what I remember doing:

1) Remove screw from the cup in the door armrest and remove cup
2) Remove screw from door handle, slide door handle assembly to the right and pull out (don't forget to disconnect the little rod that connects to the handle)
3) There is a triangular piece of black plastic beside the lower corner of the window. You can pop this off (carefully) with a flathead screwdriver.
4) The fun part: I usually started at the lower corners of the door panel for this. Take the same flathead and insert it between the door and the panel, and pry the panel toward you. You'll hear each clip pop loose. There are about two or three in a row at the bottom, keep reinserting the flathead at various points along the border of the panel and prying until you pop loose the clips.
5) Once you loosen all of the clips, you'll be able to slide the panel upward off of the door. Once you slide it up and off, disconnect the lock, courtesy light and window wire harnesses. You should be good to go then.

NOTE: when you go to put the door panel back on, make sure all of the clips are still on the panel (some of them sometimes stick in place on the door). Just pop them back into place on the panel, and when you lower the panel back into place on the door, just push on all the spots where the clips are and they'll pop back into place. (did I use the word 'place' enough? wow)

If you have any more ?'s let us know...good luck!
