break a amp down and look at it, i think you'll find that 95% of automotive amplifiers use simple MOSFET switches to provide gain. the actual gain knob usually adjusts how turned on the MOSFET's are. anywhere from off to hard on. its just the easy way to do it, thus its how most all manufacturers do it.
