Default Can someone explain this A/B vs. D class amps?

I'm looking for a amp to push one 12" woofer and wonder about the amp classes. Right now I'm running a Kicker ZR240 amp for my subs and a Phoenix Gold 500.4 amp for the highs. Does it make a great difference using a A/B or D class for the subs?

Thanks
Rob

The great amp class debate...

If you were to use class D anywhere, it would be on a sub. Class D amps are more efficient than others, but you lose speed in the process (slew rate).

Like what Cheezthis said, Class D amps are super power efficient, except they can only really be used for low frequencies. Class A/B amps use more power, but can produce a better output for a much bigger frequency range and better sound quality.

That's what I've read from other sites but was confused about the sound quality issue between the two. I don't think I could really hear the difference between a high quality sub amp and a middle quality.

Some amps I have thinking about are Crossfire, JL Audio 300.2 and a Phoenix Gold Tantrum 500.2. Basically I'll be using them to push one Image Dynamics 12".

you won't really even notice the difference, unless you are an audiophile. just go class d they are cheaper and more efficent.

You dont necessarily have to be an audiophile to notice the difference. It just sounds like a muddy system with more potential. Like when people upgrade thier mids and highs but use a Class D amp and think, "I thought it would sound so much louder and brighter than this".

Class D amps cant reproduce a full frequency range like an A/B amp. Youre going to be missing out on a lot if you use a Class D on your mids and highs.

Just stick with Class D on your subs. It will work fine on an Image 12. I used to run Memphis ST1000Ds in several systems with Image Dynamics subs.

rephase it into english please.

which image dynamic sub are you pushing? the IDQ im guessing.

a cheap (in cost) amp i like to use is the JBL PowerValve Series. you can find it easily on ebay.

600.1 or 1200.1, <$200 or <$250 respectivly. although realize those amps are best used @2 or 1OHM. they are single channel amps btw.
