Default Weird Problem With a Head Unit

Allright, yesterday I was given a used Clarion DRB4375, i went and got the wire adaptor so that i wouldnt have to cut my stock one and went to work and hooking it up. With my 2000 Civic it took a wheil to get the old one out, but than we put the new one in and tested it with the car in the ON position but not running. So i figured it works, put the entire dash back to gether and than turn the car on so i can go for a ride and it started to smoke around the top of the unit, it was just really one puff so i turned the car off and puleed both fuses and the car ran fine but im wondering what could have causeed that raido to fry like that?

I took it apart when i got home from wok and a mosfet blew up inside the Head unit so it looks pritty bad, theres a huge black mark on the metal that was above the one that blew, i have to look into it farhter but from what i can tell all te wire were hooked up right so, but this thing was 7 years old and i got it used so idk what could have happpened to it before i had it, lucky i didnt cut my stock plug..
