definately check out elemental designs
a few other brands you can check out are resonant engineering @ www.reaudio.com
check out their SE series. awesome subs. the 12's are 190 each shipped (i beleive). no tax unless you live in tennesee.
if you really want to go huge check out their XXX subwoofer
takes 1600 watts to get the RMS, but in a big enough ported enclosure you can get that thing moving to xmax with 1000 watts easy. and that thing will get DAMN loud. way louder than is comfortable to listen to, given that you put it in the right install.
i plan on actually getting a couple RE SE 12's.
even though they're not on sale for a while (like 2 months or less, not quite sure) if you can wait that long, check out the magnum D2 from stereo integrity. www.stereointegrity.com
awesome driver once again, and only 200 bucks.
ALL of the drivers mentioned above will have AWESOME sound quality while getting loud/louder than HELL in the right enclosure. hope this helped

and remember, its 10% product, 90% install. for example my friend has a 91 civic hatch and he just put a blaupunkt PAPER, yes i said paper, cone sub with a POS sony amp powering it. shitty beyond beleif. BUT the guy who owned this car before him was a guy who works at the local stereo shop, and he had built a custom MDF and fiberglass enclosure in the back of this thing, so its tough as nails. i heard my friend drive by a few times and was like "hey he got a system, sick". next time i saw him i listened to it and it banged. then i asked what he had. he showed me and i was in disbeleif. i can't wait till he throws a quality sub and amp in there. its gonna slam

so with this being said, all of the drivers above and some that others have mentioned all have the potential to sound GREAT in a great enclosure, OR have the potential to sound like ass in a poorly built enclosure. its all in the install.
