Default Honda Accord 1989 Battery Question

I have learned a lot from reading the posts on this forum. Many thanks. Would appreciate any help on this.

I currently have an Exide battery which is about 4years old in my 1989 Honda Accord. Tends to be slow in starting if I do'nt use it for 2 or 3 days. Would like to replace the battery. The BCI group number for 1989 Honda's is #26. I am thinking of using a Sears Diehard battery, but the only one they recommend for my Honda is a Weatherhandler.

I would like to use the Diehard Gold (or Silver) if possible, which I believe should have a longer life & Reserve Capacity. Can anyone suggest a suitable group number or Diehard battery which will fit in this type of Accord. The battery space available is somewhat small in these Honda models.

Would the WeatherHandler last OK? Am open to any suggestions ...

Thanks, JT

From what I have been told,, there are 5 manufactors left in the US that make batteries, from there many otheres put their name on them.. My suggestion,,is to buy the cheapest battery you can find, because it will probable out last your 89 anyways..

sts2 or anybody else:

Thanks for replies. I wouldn't mind holding onto this car for a while longer if it holds up. Has been very reliable.

If I go with a Red Top Optima, can I make the existing battery tie-down work or do I need a new one? The Optima 75/35 is larger than my original BCI #26 size, but I think it will fit in. Mostly, it is longer lengthwise.

Wouldn't mind having a more reliable battery.

Thanks, JT

95AccordEXR, thanks for 3geez.com link. Didn't know that 3rd generation models had a whole website to themselves! Will be checking it out ...

Also, I guess I should have the alternator looked at. I was thinking there might be a small drain on the battery somewhere.

Well Guys, based on the input from this forum, bought an Optima
for $100 at Costco. Doing great so far! Don't have to pump or even press the accelerator to start.

Plus no more leaking acid to deal with. The previous battery, supposedly 'no maintenance', failed during the first year due to low fluid level. Since then I have kept the fluid level up, but it seemed to have a persistant low-level acid leak. Wished I was aware of the Optima leak-proof earlier.

Thanks for the suggestions, JT
