What do u mean by harsh environment? Harsh becuz of the ppl there or becuz of the weather? I can deal with the weather...I will get it detailed and washed a lot. But ppl I can't avoid.

What is the point of having a car you like and are proud of if you keep it locked away in a garage. People forget that the main reason for a car is utility/mobility. The fact that it is a nice car and that you are proud of it is an added bonus. I would not recommend getting a beater...that's just stupid. You are paying/have paid for the car and its insurance...WHY NOT USE IT?! A beater wont do much for you in college, because when you want to go on a long trip you really wont want to/be able to; also, bumming rides is the biggest pain in the f*cking ass when you are in college. Just use your car and park it under a light or whatever for some added protection.

Own your CAR, don't let your car own YOU.

Good pts...Hope I can remember this pt. when I'm sitting in my dorn everyday wondering about the whip....

Another question for everyone:

I usually put my rims on in April and take them off in October. Becuz of college, however, I will be moving in August. I was planning on leaving them on and then changing them in October like I usually do becuz I get a little break in October...so I could just bring it home and put the stock wheels back on.

Should I leave them on for the fist 2 months @ college or should I take them off before I leave?

I would hate to take them off in August when the weather is still great!!! Here in NY rims are pretty much fine until early-mid November but I just usually take them off in October to be safe...

But...the rims would attract more attention for the first couple of months the car is there than stock wheels....

Let me know what u guys think of this one...

The best you can do is try not to draw attention to your car, practice defensive parking (far away and not near other ding causing cars), and walk more around campus. I say keep your car clean, but don't go nuts cuz that's when people notice. Keep a low profile. Don't let everybody know that you have a system cuz college kids are all crooks.

Well, having just graduated from there and having an accord too, I can say that probably the weather is more harsh on your car than anything else. First of all, it is an accord, and an older one at it. Ithaca is a small town with two types of people, retirees, and college related people. Neither group presents much of a security threat. Sometimes I forget to lock my car or apartment for days and nothing happened. I lived in one of the "more" run down apartments too with kids next door that were supposedly high school trouble makers. It is an older accord, and frankly, the bmw's and the mercedes are so prevalent, that a thief would have to be a fool to skip those up to steal an accord.

There is not that much on campus parking. If you get a parking space, most likely it will be off campus and they will also give you a bus pass that you can use to ride on campus. It is freaking dusty there. After an hour or so, I can see a fine layer of dust after washing my car. And about the rims, you'll probably have to wash them a lot considering the slush (partially melted snow) that is prevalent. There are a few potholes to watch out for on certain roads, but it isn't too terrible. I recommend getting tires with a decent tread or your going to be slipping and sliding a lot in the snow. It was fun learning how to drive in the snow. A few full-nelsons? (360 spins) helped me master driving in the snow. I remember once having a little difficult time driving up a hill because of the slush and this is with pretty brand new tires, so you have been warned.
Oh, and the most danger to your car would probably be the drivers who didn't bother to practice driving in the snow and plow through it at 10 over the limit and have no idea how to regain control when their tires have lost traction. I've seen people do crazy stuff with their cars. One person thought it was fun to slip and slide in an S shape and ended up hitting the curb really hard when he slipped to far to the left. He bent at least a rim from what I could tell. Another person took a curve too fast and couldn't stay in his land and ended up jumping the curb on the opposite side. I didn't bother to stop and help that idiot. I have a bunch more I've seen and probably could go on and on, but this is enough for now.

wow that's a lot of great info!!! and on top of that you were @ Cornell w/ an accord and on this message board?...What r the chances of that?

Anways...as far as the rims are concerned...like I said I don't plan on having them on in the winter time...I will either take them off in August before I go or I will take them off in October during Fall break. But...my new question is this...

My car is dropped w/ an Eibach Pro Kit...it is not that great in the snow here in Albany...but I didn't have to drive it much during the winters prior to this upcoming winter...this winter, however, I will have no choice. For Cornell and for the Ithaca area in general...should I get snow tires??? Or just really good all weather tires for my stock wheels???

I've never driven with snow tires before, so I don't know if they are really necessary. They do a pretty good job of keeping the snow plowed, but the plows are not there when it is late at night (driving back from a party). I got around with crappy all seasons (Stock 2 x Dunlop SP40's and 2 x General AmeriGS). The time I had trouble driving up the hill, I had to back up and go forward again a few times because of the way the road was curved I would eventually hit the curb if I kept on going forward. I tried steering it many different ways, but the car just wouldn't respond how I wanted it to.

Hey Rix2357

Since you were there and all...

What kind of mechanic shops are there? I know there's a Sears...but any full service shops such as Goodyear or Firestone?
Also, is there a Valvoline (I like their service and oil).

Is there a Honda dealer near by?

Is there a touch free car wash and a place where I can get the car vacumed?

If any of these exist...plz let me know how far they are from campus...thanx!!!

Yes there is a Sears, yes there are many shops (independant, goodyear, monroe, minekie etc.) and yes there is a very good Honda dealership...check out this link Ithaca Auto Shops All of these shops are within 5 minutes from Cornell. Cornell is about 1.5 MI from Ithaca College so you can understand that this information is the same for someone living on the East Hill (AKA Cornell)

OT - It's too bad that in NYC Honda dealerships are not as user friendly or cheap. I like getting work done up in Ithaca better.
