Default New to Honda

I just purchased my first Honda, a 2002 Accord EX, 5-spd, sedan. I came from the Ford camp, my last car being a '95 Probe SE 5-spd. The Probe was great when I first got out of college, now I need something that has four doors and a real backseat. Anyway, chose the Accord because of it's double-wishbone suspension, VTEC engine, and it was one of the few cars in its class that I could get a manual with. After driving this car for only a few months, I'm a believer. Believe it or not, despite the firmer suspension and 60-series tires on the Probe, this car outperforms it and in bone-stock form in nearly every aspect (IMHO, no flames please). At this point, I can honestly say that I don't believe I will ever purchase another Ford product.

Anyway, let's get to the reason for my posting: I've only just begun planning my mods. I noticed that the top speed is governed just over 100mph, probably due to the lack of speed-rated tires. Obviously, I've got plenty of tach left at 105, is there any easy way to kill the fuel cutoff short of replacing the ECU? Anyone tried swapping chips with an ECU out of a coupe (I assume they have real, speed-rated tires and therefore a higher top speed allowance)? Any input would be appreciated.

TIA

ex's usually are limited to around 130-140 mph not low 100's....

try harder and hold it in 4 th gear till redline and then shift.

the coupe and sedan 4cyl's should have the smae chip.

First of all, congrats on your purchase.

True, your EX can excede 100. The EX/LX 4 banger versions of the coupe and sedan both come with 195/65 R15 All-Season tires. While the EX-V6 Coupe comes with 16" alloy wheels on 205/60 R16 tires. The DX/LX-V6/Sedan/Coupe all vary a little, but nothing that would change the top speed of the Accord (except on the DX engine).

My 01 auto sedan goes above 110, try holding it in 4th like vtecinside said.

Good point - will try it in fourth next time. It just seemed to give up at about 105, I figured I'd hit fuel cutoff. I had heard that manufacturers limit the top speeds of their cars based on what the tire was rated for and just figured that was the case with my car.

Oh, also meant to say 50-series tires when I was talking about the Probe. My Accord has the 195/65-R15 tires.

Thanks all for the responses... I look forward to talking with you all in the future, I've been playing with Probes for a while now (I owned two) and am anxious to try some of the aftermarket Honda stuff. I'm hoping to do some of the basics (suspension, wheels, intake, exhaust) and maybe eventually forced induction.

Prob is like the U.S. version of Mazda MX-6. Like talon to Eclipse. I remember when I got into the car accident 2 years ago I was gonna get the MX-6. My ex loved the styling and the price
Anyway I am glad I fixed my Accord tho. Congrats on your new purchase!! You've made a wise decision, now have fun playing around w/ the mods!!

Welcome to the club and congrats on your purchase!

I also came from the Ford camp, but I was more and less fortunate. I previously owned and driven a 93 Ford Tempo GL and a 98 Lincoln Navigator (weekend car), both of which are gone now - crashed and sold, respectively. I modded both minorly and i guess they were fun for the time being.

Your accord should be able to hit well over 110. I've seen my automatic 2001 VP/DX model at 104 mph and that is about 16 hp less than the LX model. There should not be a speed governor and yours is a stick so I dont think it has a rev limiter either.

Hope you have a great time with our Accord club here. And stay safe on the road while testing

Like I said, won't buy any car without a stick - being able to get a stick with a sunroof, six disc-in dash changer, 4-wheel discs & ABS at a price of around $20,000 was a big bonus, otherwise I probably would've gotten a new Altima. Plus the dealer practically gave the car away... then again, I made him grab his ankles pretty good - took me almost two weeks of making the poor guy compete with another dealership. At this point, I'm paying less in monthly payments than I was for my old car

Anyway, I don't think I'd bother mod'ding an autotranny. Replacing it with a stick would be my first performance mod, if I had one. There's something like a 25% drivetrain powerloss in automatics - plus, you can never spin your tires.... what a bore. Can't imagine not shifting for myself. Now that I think about it, what fun is a VTEC when you can't downshift it manually right into the sweet spot and smoke the moron trying to pass you on the right...
