not quite. the thermostat is a valve that opens when the car's operating temperature reaches a certain point. the valve lets more coolant circulate thru the radiator.

there is a separate thermoswitch that turns on the cooling fan when teh car gets to a certain temperature.

by definition a thermostat is an over temp sensor.

Well I know its an old school trick and occasionally works but I also noticed that when I had this problem on my Civic turning the heat on did nothing for the car since for some reason Honda has some switch that turns any heat flow off and won't allow the heater to dissipate it.

In other cars I have owned (domestics) it works but in Hondas I don't think it works the same at all.

This was why I made the comment.

ther·mo·stat Pronunciation Key (thûrm-stt)
n.

A device, as in a home heating system, a refrigerator, or an air conditioner, that automatically responds to temperature changes and activates switches controlling the equipment.

ahh yes.... but the thermostat in a car (honda) doesnt turn on the fan. the thermoswitch does. the thermostat opens a valve.

I have a 95 accord 2.2 vtec EX

My cooling fan only comes on when my car is off. When my car is on and I am idleing the temp with go up slowly. so I just changed my thermostat.

When I took out my old thermostat it was stuck on close so I know that it was bad. but my cooling fan doesnt come on with my ignition on. Could it be my cooling fan sensor located where my thermostat is? PLEASE HELP!!!
