would you lose mileage or mess up ur engine if you dont use 5w-30 oil. Lets say i use 10w-40 what would happen?

if you live in OC, nothing should happen. it doesn't freeze over down here. in fact, i think we should be using 10w-40 here. it gets quite hot.
