I think the deal with Slick 50 is that it does work in the short term.
Overtime something happens like a chemical reaction to the Slick 50 which cause it to rust the engine from the inside out.
also you know that ball bearing wear test, you can do the same thing with preparation H.
I could be wrong, but I thought I read or heard somewhere that teflon was a powder. Someone mentioned those particles were gonna clog up your filter. I also heard that the temperature required before the teflon even "bonds" with metal...would be so high that engine damage would result from those high temps. But again, I could be mistaken. And a question on synthetic oil...has anyone successfully switched to synthetic on semi-high mileage cars, without developing oil leaks? I'm not sure about Honda...but the VW's and Audis I work on...if the owner wants synthetic..he has to start using it before the engine is broken in, or it leaks EVERYWHERE. I thought of going to synthetic myself...but not if my engine will start leaking.
I've been told by many different people that it doesn't matter how old the engine is. The only difference between synthetics and natural oil is the life of the oil. BTW, you're talking about VW's, I mean, seriously, VW's... they're probably leaking from the factory

I use X1R in my car (www.x1r.com)
Besides everyone being skeptical about it, it does what it's claimed. My engine definately feels smoother, and my gas mileage has increased about 3mpg city.
And no, it has not clogged my oil filter.

some thoughts from a newbie to this site... (not a newbie to cars)
I've used Slick50 on several cars. Each car was bought new, & we kept them to fairly high mileage:
'86 Jetta; sold it at 146k miles; Slick50 starting about 50k
'89 Saab 900; sold at 220k miles; Slick50 from 35k
'95 GS-R; still going at 111k miles; Slick50 from 16k
Never had trouble clogging the filter. The stuff is fine enough to go thru. None of these have had any trouble with the oil. Or with rings or bearings. When we sold the '89 Saab a couple months ago, the cylinder compression was still really good.
So I never saw any damage, but does it do any good? I have my doubts, & I may not use it in our newer cars. ('98 Accord & '01 Saab)
Synthetic oil...
This is like starting a holy war over on SaabNet.com where I also hang out. Everybody likes it, but many people say that it'll make an older engine start leaking. Others point out that just means your seals were already gone & the dirt was holding them together. There are people over there that switch to synthetic after years of petroleum. YMMV...
I use synthetic on the '01 Saab since its required for the turbo bearings, don't use synth on the others.

Switched our 98 Volvo S70 to Mobil 1 with over 90k on the clock. Now at 108k with no leaks whatsoever.
Synthetics dont cause leaks, they do a good job cleaning up and dispersing crud. If you had a leak before, the synthetic may cause it to leak a little more due its better detergants removing crud that may be filling the leak a little. Most synthetics have additives for the seals as well so I woudlnt worry about your seals leaking all of a sudden. You can switch whenever you want to, and you can also switch back whenever you want to as well.
P.S. There is a reason Slick 50 was fined heavily for false advertising and maing false claims. it doesnt work. Use a quart of Marvels Mystery Oil and it will clean up and quiet the valvetrain better than most additives out there.

Yes, thanks for all the input everyone. Sounds like Synthetics are a good way to go. I'll also look into the Mystery Oil. Always seen it around but never paid much attention to it.
Not to bring up an old thread but lately at around 2200 miles I have to add about another qt of M1 to the whip. I saw the STP oil treatment. Would it actually do any harm to motor to use it or don't add it in.
