Default antenna probs on my 94....hmmm

Ok heres the just.....My antenna goes up, but right as it gets the top it makes 3 jerking movements, as in it doesn't go up smooth near the top. The same thing occurs as its going down. I tried to lube it up but that didn't work. Today after making the jerky movements on the way in, the antenna got stuck with about 5 inches left up. Opening my trunk, it sounds like the noise is coming from where the antenna motor is, you know on the side of the trunk behind the trunk padding/rug. It doesn't do this ALL the time, but alot. What should I do? How hard is it to rip open my trunk and get to the antenna motor?

Seems like this has been a problem for many years now. Back in the early 90's I rememeber all of my friends having to replace there antenna's. Right before my mom gave me her accord she replaced it with the same problems you mentioned. A jerking sound right when it hits the top. Apparently the dealer told her these antennas always fail and the only way to solve it is to have a new one put in. Not worth trying to fix it. I'll find out how much the antenna cost.

Yeah ive been reading alot of complaints on boards like this about the antennas. If you can find out how much it cost to replace that would be cool. Im do for an oil change plus some other stuff in about 2 weeks so ill probably tell honda to look at it then too.

You'll pay an arm and a leg at the Honda dealer for antenna motor and install.

I know. But do i only need the motor, or the whole antenna assembly w/ motor? I ask because if the installation is not that hard, i can get the whole antenna assembly for $220 from magauto.com as opposed to $300+ which honda will charge for part and install. If its just the motor, thats only $144. What needs to be replaced and is it possible to DIY?

Talked to my mom, she told me it was $500, sounds like they might have replaced everything. But fortunately spending that extra $400 for the extended warranty covered it.

Yo, do you even listen to the radio? Cuz if you don't, I have a solution. I just removed mine a week ago (it was having problems, too) and rigged up a little system. $0.45 and a trip to Home Depot will buy you a low profile round head bolt and a nut and washer. Prime and paint it with touch-up paint and you've got a clean lookin' plug. (Check out my thread on page 2, I think, if you want the whole story.) But if you need those radio waves flowing...ouch....having the warranty helps, tho.

This happened to my antenna as well. The teeth on the inner push/pull cord get worn down near the top and it will start skipping teeth and 'jerking'. I took mine apart and modified it so it no longer goes into that region. It is super easy to get to, pull it out, open it up and see what you can do... save yourself bucks!
