When the car is idling in the cat converter noisey,, does it rattle? If it does rattle it means that the materail inside of it has become lose. I once had an 88 accord,, the materail came lose and left me on the side of the road b/c the engie could not breath. No noise? no worries of this.

Run the code, if its just the O2 sensor, get a new one, about $200. It just screws right in. Cat-converter, no more than $200 w/labor at a regular shop. About inspection, if anything, just get a shop to hook you up , c'mon you live in New York.

BTW: Dealerships are a rip-off!

Update!

I went to a small local shop and got the inspection this morning (The CEL never turned back on) and it passed emissions. However, my rear brake pads were starting to get iffy and the metal started to scratch the disc. So, I'll have to do that and do the safety inspection again.

fredge, there is no noise.

Line7, I really am thinking it's either nothing or the O2 sensor. Thanks for the prices.

And thanks everyone for your help! I'll post back if anything changes.

Good to hear the problem's solved, at least for now. You always have to take what the dealer tells you with a pinch of salt. I went to the dealer once when my catalytic converter was making noise on my '93 Accord. It sounded like marbles rolling around in the exhaust. They told me I needed a new CC. I took it to another shop, one we use for most routine repairs that I can't do. He told me it was the heat shield on the downpipe from the exhaust manifold. He bent it back a little and that was it, didn't even charge me for it. No problems after that. That little experience made me think twice about the dealer. I'm not saying they're all bad, but they're not any better than any other mechanic out there either.
