i have an old jetta and it had the same issue so i bought some steering fluid with sealer in it and you just dump it in with the rest of the power steering fluid. its like five bucks at any parts store.

Yes it is possible and more than likely probable that your rack is leaking. It is not very easy to replace so if you are not mechanically inclined you would be better to take it to somebody.

Sounds like you know your way around so if I was you I would try it. Just be patient when you do it and make sure when you take off your tie rod ends to count the number of turns it takes to take them off so when you put them back on the new rack they will be close to what they were. Then take it in for an alignment when your done. It is really tight and takes some time to work out but it is doable.

Thats why you count how many turns it takes to remove the tie rod ends. The coupler for the steering wheel is master splined so you can only put it on one way. Just make sure you take it in for an alignment when you are done. Should only cost you 40-60 dollars depending on if you do a two wheel or four wheel alignment.
