what is the general consensus in the honda community about the new 4cyl i-vtecs that have chains and not belts? chains dont need to be changed like belts, what are the negatives of using a chain for timing?

It never bothered me to have to replace the t-belt, since I thought of it as a good time to replace the waterpump and various other items besides just the belt to avoid later problems/breakdowns. Now with the chain, those essential components are less likely to get replaced when they should (which is BEFORE they break)

The timing belt replacement should include all parts listed above, also, the tensioner bearing should be replaced. There is a nice kit online at partsdinosaur.com that includes balancer belt, timing belt, water pump, and both tensioner bearings. This kit lacks the oil pump seal and the front crank seal which definately need to be replaced. The kit itself is $110 and the two seals I mentioned are 5 bucks each from honda. Therefore the entire job will cost you around 125-150 or so. I did the job in 3 hours, there are PDF files showing you what to do which I found after I did it. But...if you think improvement will come from a TB replacement, you should def. not try it. But, if you played with legos as a kid and have common sense and tools...just do it...but make sure you are on TDC otherwise...well, you're gonna be doing it again...and risk valve issues.

I refuse to take my car in for anything, my tranny with 205K slips a lil and I have my rebuild kit in the garage and im gonna do that next week. The kit was $109...the book was 35...that itself is common sense. especially for a car with high mileage.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the help (Itsahonda especially  ). I dropped my car off last night and they are going to look over the transmission this morning.

I am on a budget so I don't want to spend the money to do both the transmission (if i have to) AND replace the timing belt. I'll see what they say after looking it over. I took it to a place here in Denver that is not a dealer, but specializes in Hondas. They have always seem to be honost and will match any prices so I usually call around to get quotes. I think that last time I was in he quoted the timing belt around $700 with labor, but when i called around, I got him down to $575.

If I need a new transmission, how much would that cost?
