Ripped CV Boot
Depending on year/model, they all look sorta like this.

The boot we're talking about is sorta between #8 & #10 on the outboard end of each axle. The stub end sticks into the steering knuckle & hub, so unless you take the axle out of the car, you only see from the #8 pointer inward.
Remember, if the car's on the ground, with the steering turned all the way over, the outer CV joint will be flexed way over. But just follow the drive axle out to the hub & there it is.
If it has literally JUST torn, you can consider a new boot. If you don't know how long it's been torn, I'd get an axle assembly. If it's already clicking, you definitely need the axle.
Also, it wouldn't hurt to inspect the inboard boots, too.

just look at it to see if its ripped or not. i replaced both sides last week and it took me about 2 1/2 hours to do. by the CV boot "split kit". this kit alows you to replace your CV Boot without having to pull out your whole axle. its alot easier and less time consuming.
have to replace my CV axles on my gf's '94 Accord LX, hopefully tomorrow. Are the remanufactured ones from Autozone ok to use? How long can I expect this job to take me? I've never replaced cv axles before...anything I should keep in mind that isn't obvious? Thanks.
To see if your CV joint is damaged, do the following:
1) Come to a complete stop.
2) Turn your wheel all the way to right
3) Slowly give some gas
4) See if you hear clicking sound coming from front
5) Repeat above except turn all the way to left
If your boot is ripped but you don't have the clicking problem, REPLACE instead of repair the boot only and repack. If you wait until they click, you have to replace the whole CV joint assembly. In another word, if you are fortunate enough to notice the rip without the click, DON'T WAIT!
