Questions for all the experts
I have some question on the operation of my new (3 week old) ’06 Accord EX Coupe that I haven’t been able to determine from reading the Owners Manual. I am hoping someone here can break it down for me so that a nOOb like me can understand.
A/C:
1. I am assuming that if I shut off the A/C and instead turn on the vents I will increase my gas mileage. On a ’06 Accord EX Coupe how exactly do you turn on the vents? Do you turn off the A/C then just turn the fan speed up and if that is it, what does the recirculation button do, does that play a part in weather or not the Vent is on?
2. If I turn the A/C off but need to use the front defroster will that use as much gas as if I had the A/C on and was using the front defroster? Or can the fan speed determine that?
3. The recirculation button if on with A/C on putts less strain on the system then if it were off, correct?
Automatic Transmission:
1. I live in a very hilly part of the country; as such I am often downshifting into 2nd gear when going down hills in the attempt to save my breaks. Breaks aren’t covered under warranty, transmission is :-) Once I have shifted down to second gear and have reached the bottom of the hill more often than not I will shift back into “D”, what would I do if I accidentally shift into neutral with the car still moving, going between 20 and 25 MPH? Can I just realize my mistake and put it in gear, or do I have to come to a complete stop, and then put it in gear?
Well, that’s all for now, really really like this car, it is so darn fun to drive :-)

well, brakes are easier to replace than a tranny so id suggest using the brakes...trust me.
shifting in nuetral is just coast...it is fine. shifting back into gear is okay as long as it is not reverse when you are moving foward.
hell, you can even shift it into 1st at around 40mph and it'll probably just shoot up to 6k, lol. my friend did it beforte in his camry, hahahah.
anyways, for the a/c...once you hit the button and it doesnt light up than you are not using it.
idk, some people say that they have only seen a 3mpg effect from using a/c. fan speed is fan speed, i dont think it'll affect the mpg. best is to just use a/c when crusiing or coasting.
the recirculation doesnt affect mpg either, whent he cabin is already cold, it just reciculates the cold air as opposed to the hot/room temp. air outside.
hope this helps.

Hey whassup?
I know that the AC thing will save you some money at the pump. And make you tank go further, but as for the Auto tranny shifting at speed thing, I would dare to say I think it's ok.
Don't do it on my word though. I just wanted bump this thread for you.

1. just hit the ac button till it says AC off. recirc is your personal preference
2. No. the front defroster is just another vent. defrost works best when you have the AC on so dryer air is blown to reduce moisture on the inside. For ice, it doesnt really matter
3. Doesnt make a diffreence.
if you shift into N... you can shift back into d4 immediately. Just dont let the engine rev up too high in N. Hell you can even shift it into reverse and it wont do anything. (note: do not try this at home. it works on the 6th gens, but i havent tried it on others. dont come to me of you fuck anything up)

Just use your damn brakes...it'll cost you $50 bucks and 30 minutes to replace your front pads with OEM pads. Do you really think that would be better to be without your car for a week and have to put up with dealing with the dealer, etc?Just use your brakes...that's where they are made for.
Now if you were going down a 5 mile canyon with 10 percent grades everyday, then sure, I could see going down into D3 to avoid brake fade, etc...but for a couple hills on your daily commute, I wouldn't do it.
