Default 1999 Honda Odessey Problem

Im not really a mechanic but theres somethin wrong with our car and I needa know what it might be and how to fix it by myself if possible or take it to a professional.

1. The car wont start, i mean it starts and its shuts off half way through unless i press the gas and hold it down.

2. The check engine light is on because of the catalyic converter. Whats the cheapest and easiest way to get this fixed/replaced.

3. I think this might be a problem with most of them but when the car hesitates when going from 1st to second gears more like it kicks back I heard there was somethin wrong with the 2nd gear switch but i dont know.

It would be great if someone could like direct me over the phone and tell me how to fix these things but if not possible you guys can tell me where i should go and recommend a few places in houston, texas?

Id really appreciate it because this car is like our main car.

I'll copy this thread to the Accord forum as it may be helpful since your problem isn't Ody specific.

Sounds like a jammed EGR issue.

When it shuts off, is the idle bouncing? Or does the car just completely die? (aka flatline, no warning signs)

it just dies and yes it is the EGR and what does Manufactured Transmission thingy mean?

One more question is there a list for the codes that come up when you check the car? I need a good but least expensive fix for the Catalyc Converter, Manufacture Controlled Transmission, and EGR. and if someone lives in the houston, texas area find me a place that gives loaner cars also? thanks in advance

Dallas, Honda Factory Certified Tech Here

First How Many Miles On the Van?

04-021 is a MAJOR recall on the last gen of odys. the second gear assembly gets deprived of fluid and Heats to the point of destruction (over period of months) then causes a transmission Lock up.

Your probleem sounds like an upshift issue. which on odys is not good, most likely trans replacement (ODY original transmissions are complete peices of @#$@, the HONDA remans Are good)

Catalytic convertor Might Be under Recall Emmisions Extension Still, EGR as Well,
In fact you just listed the most Common ODY problems. Honda Has been cleaning up those messes for a while now

Did you try searching those codes? I've probably posted one or two of em at least. Your codes are probably the same as Accord V6 DTCs, so look in the FAQ for the ones you can't find.

honda dealers are chargin 1000 bucks for the catalyic converter when the part only costs 127 bucks. and they chargin 350 to clean the EGR and 4500 for the transmission but we dont need a new transmission we just need to get a part of it.

whats the easiest fix?

...find out what the codes mean and do it yourself. You can't get around the cat, you'll have to either replace that or not. You can do the EGR yourself if you buy a Helms manual and the tranny can be found on ebay or a junkyard remanufactured or slightly used for way under $1k. I got mine with 33k miles for $700 shipped and its been performing very well for the past 45k miles.
