possible damage from big ass pothole
hey ya'll
i just hit the big ass pothole in freeway going 60mph and hit the pothole... eventually my rim got damaged, bent crazy...
i would like to ask you that what would be the possible damage other than bent rim? hopefully my suspension system didn't get damaged... you know rim is cheap these days, i can just go get one, but dealing with funked up suspension system can be painfull....
please advise w/ any possible damage i should look for.

a pothole shouldnt do anything to the suspension... the only thing that would really screw up your suspension is if you get smacked in the side by another car, and they hit a wheel. The suspension is made to travel up and down, and absorb the shock of bumps or whatever it may be that you hit.

my brother was driving in k-town the other day with the jt evo3 bumper on. he came to a section of road where the top layer of asphalt was removed for repaving. he was cruising when u came up to a manhole cover, where it protruded about 3-4" off the ground. lets just say that only half the bumper was attached to the car afterwords.
so now we're gonna file a claim with caltrans to get our bumper replaced
i hated that bumper anyway.... fuggly as hell

but the problem is that this damn pothole was so big that it might have given some horizontal force rather than just vertical force....

I hit a curb while hydroplaning before (crappy stock michelin MXV4's, stock rims, stock suspension)...i was going about 15 mph by the time i hit the curb. $3,300 in damages. (really, just about $1,200 in parts&labor) apparently, the subframe was damaged, the whole driver-side suspension was reworked, new shocks, springs, arms, joints, etc.
if you have a hard hit vertically to your suspension, it won't cost too much. it's made for it. if you have a light hit horizontally, it will cost more than the hard hit vertically.
get your car aligned. they can tell if your caster is off. toe is correctable. camber is slightly adjustable, but for caster, you need to fix either the entire suspension, or get a camber kit and hope the ball joint doesn't slip.

man... sorry to hear that....
anyways, your case was hitting a curb right? from the side, right?
my case was that while i was going 60mph and hit the pothole which is about 3-4inches tall... that's way my rim got bent hella... but tire is still running fine for the moment. (yeah i know i must replace the tire in order to prevent further damages) anyways, that's why my rim got damaged and alignment is slightly off.
i wonder how would it cause the damage in case like mine....

it's okay because i'm fine and so is the car now after repairs. best thing about having one of the safest cars on the road.
yours shouldn't be too bad. just get the rim fixed first, get your car aligned, and if you can't tell if anything's wrong, then nothing probably is. even major potholes (or sinkholes) are still vertical motions unless it's over 6" causing your whole suspension to be stuck in it and moved back with the momentum of 3,300 lbs.

My alignment got thrown off a few years back when I hit a pothole that size, also the tire had a bubble in it that needed replacement. My suspension was totally fine, but the caster was way off. You should get an alignment done.
