Alternator replaced now A/C isn't cold
I just had the alternator replaced on my 1998 AV6 (133,000 miles) yesterday. Now, the a/c comes on but does not blow out cold air even when turned down to the coldest setting (60). I also can't "hear" it start up when i turn it on. I know nothing about cars but I assume they had to disconnect the battery at some point yesterday. Could that have done anything to make the a/c not cool now?
Your AC compressor runs off the same belt that the alternator does. Make sure that the belt is still wrapped around the compressor. This is why I don't let others that I don't trust touch my car...magic stuff happens.
Make sure the compressor is plugged in. If it was done right the fan on the passenger side needs to be removed to get the altenator out so im sure all the connectors were unplugged to do so. just double check. Its a single red wire all the way @ the bottum of the shroud
The low pressure line for the A/C system runs right over top of the alternator on the V6 model, and the alternator is removed from the top. If they nicked the line and caused a slow leak the low pressure cutout switch would keep the compressor from enagaging and destroying itself. That would explain the lack of cool air and the fact that the clutch on the compressor isn't engaging.
