Default 98 Accord engine failure while driving

Guys, need your opinion please. 3 month ago, when I was driving ~20km/h in a traffic my car died and I coudn't start it on a first attempt. A day after I couldn't start it on a parking lot. Mechanic diagnosed and replaced ignition cap, wires and distributor rotor. And now it started again... When I took off from the traffic light (didn't reach 50km/h) the engine died. When I hold the key on III, the engine seems to be running, once released (back on II) it stops. I noticed that it happens on a low speed, may be when it's shifting from 1 to 2 ? Mechanic doesn't know. I want to understand my car better. What's wrong with my car ?

how's the electrical stuff in your car? are there any odd warning lights on the dash?

does the engine die at a certain RPM? in a certain gear?

could be a couple of things from a bad ecu, to a failing alternator, to a broken part in the throttle body (jammed egr valve, failing sensor, etc)

Yes, I have a "check engine light" ON (oops, forgot to mention), which is according to diagnose "EVAP system leak (canister)".

There is a recall on the ignition switch in ALL accords 98-00. Go to honda.com owners link too see the specifics but it has probably not been done on your car. your problems are the perfect example of what happens. There is too much current flowing through the switch. Honda will replace it with a better one.

Evap system leak may cause it to run rough or not idle well (possible vacuum leak) but would not cause a stall.

How many miles?

66,000 miles. No, the ignition switch wasn't replaced on my car, I am a 2nd owner since 2001. Do you know how much approximately will it cost me ?

Thanks !

There was a recall done on those ignitions because of a safety issue. The dealer should replace it free of charge.

You talk about kilometers, so I bet you're not in USA... So the recalls are probably different. If you're not in North America, your Accord isn't even the same car.

But the problem DOES sound like a flaky ignition switch.
