Default '94 Accord + missing coolant

Hey folks, I've noticed several weeks ago that the cooling fan in my 94 Accord EX started coming on after I turn off the car, but didn't think it was a big deal until today when I noticed the temperature hit the red mark very shortly after I started warming up the car. Turns out that it's completely out of coolant!

Since I'm almost completely clueless about cars, I was hoping to get some advice from you folks. Is it possible for the coolant to dry up after a period of time (it's winter here in NYC and pretty dry), or is this definitely a leak? Should I bother filling up the coolant and monitor the level to make sure it's not leaking, or should I just get it towed to the shop to get it checked out?

Thanks in advance!

You can try to add anti-freeze and keep track of how much you are loosing. The correct way to diagnose the problem would be to do a pressure test on your cooling system. They sell the tool needed for this procedure at the parts store, or have someone do it for you. Hope this helps.

You can't burn up coolant usually. There is probably a leak somewhere. or it got into your oil jk jk.

you might have a leak somewhere, heating can be caused by many things though. radiator, water pump, head gaskets. Id start with the little things first thermostat.
