Default CV-Joint Tips??

I am doing my CV this weekend and was looking around for any tips or DIY posting but have not come across one. If you know where I can find it or a link that'd be great! I haven't done one before but have worked on my cars for years and don't expect too many suprises. If you know of anything (problems, tricks) I might run into that would be helpful too. NewB poster so be nice

Are you replacing the boots, or the entire half-shafts?

Well the joint is poppin pretty good on the left, and when i called my guy he said to do the whole half shaft and joint boot etc. but when i talked to my bro-in-law he says i can just do the outter joint which is where the actual problem is. I checked the boot and its not torn or leaking so i dont know if it just got worn or a bad job done in its past owners life. i guess its too much up in the air? i figure the whole shaft and joint is the best way to go.

Yeah, you can get lifetime warranty reman axles so cheap it's not worth messing with the boot, etc.

Tips...don't mess anything up. It's pretty easy, here in Ohio you never know when something is gonna be nice and rusted up, but once you get everything off, it's not bad.

A big breaker bar and some taps with a mini sledge are best for the large axle nut (36mm on my 99, same for my buddy's '94), and it's easiest if the car is on the ground, so do this before jacking up the car, or have someone hold the brakes with power, that'll usually hold enough for you to loosen that nut.

From there...okay, there's gotta be a DIY out there...I don't feel like typing everything out. If you have specific questions, post again here. Good luck.

do you hit the axle nut like directly on or tap around it?

im int eh process of getting mine off but i already broke a breaker bar, gonna use an impact wrnch to try.

Oh, and of you ever get into this position, use a big ass prybar and use leverage to line the bolts back up (this is after when you put the lower ball joint back in)

Thx for the responses, I am going to do the whole half shaft, now that i look at it. it wouldnt make sense to do the boot and joint for the time and cost. I cant wait to do the axel nut, especially here in ohio. I plan on using a whole can of WD40 on it before starting and i'll use my dad's breaker bar first ^.^

i wouldn't hit the bolt directly, risk mushrooming the end and make it harder for the nut to come off.. prolly tap around it
