Won't matter. Once the person gets into the car and hits the brake the car will cut off if the correct key is not in the ignition turned almost all the way over.

The one I had fitted on my old car used an immobiliser by-pass which only worked on remote-start. It also had 2 modes, 1 for an auto and 1 for a manual. In auto mode the car would shut down and immobiliser re-activate if either the foot brake was pressed (which you would need to do to get it out of park) or the handbrake was released without the key being in the ignition. In manual mode the system would automatically shut down as soon as the doors were unlocked.

Even if it didn't have these features if someone did get in your car and drive off they wouldn't realize that the steering lock would lock coz theres no keys in the ignition to release it.

bringing back a thread...

w/ cold weather approaching, i thought this might be a good time to invest in a remote starter for my car. you know, to let the car warm up for a minute before hopping in and driving off. my question is, what other hardware is necessary to make this happen?

i've looked up this DEI thing http://www.drdetailshop.com/556U.htm (dont even know what it is or stands for) and im not sure if thats all i need to have installed or if theres a lot im missing out on. will i need another seperate remote or can i program my current key? is installation difficult? what else will i need?

if anyone could give me some help it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a viper 791. Im getting the 555U installed shortly. I wanna know how someone is going to get into my car and hotwire it without my alarm going off? Ill also be adding the battery back up, so pulling the battery cable wont turn it off.

there are more advanced immobilizer bypass kits out on the market now like the 555U you need to put a spare key into the unit DEI has the 555H for 6th gen systems but use a U for the 7th theres a company bypasskits that has a databuss unit that learns your key and sends this siginal to the computer durring start and also does doorlocks and factory alarm disarm .

I wouldn't install stuff like this on my own...take it to a shop that specializes in it, so if anything goes wrong you can always bring it back.

I believe to get around the transponder chip in the key, they place either the entire key or just the chip inside the starter control unit and that negates the purpose of the chip since the ignition needs to have the chip within like 5 feet of it. This is what the shop that installed mine told me a few years ago.

There are bypass units out now that "copy" the chip/key/whatever so you dont have to leave a key in the car.

I got the viper 2way system installed in mine. ignition cuts off if you press the brakes without the key inserted and in the ON position, or if the hood is opened. Plus the transponder has a 1/4 mile range. I'm happy with it. But it was 500 installed... so yeah, not cheap, and I watched the guy do the install.... DEFINATELY not for a DIY job if you don't know precisely what you are doing.
