Default Is Honda screwing me?

My transmission was slipping, so I took it to the Honda dealership. I have a 2000 Honda Accord. They sent me the "extended warranty" for the transmission, so I brung in my Accord and they told me they were going to replace my transmission with a new one. So I said "okay, that's good" The next day, they called me and said that my rear main seal is leaking. What the hell does that mean? I've done some searching, but most of them indicate that if you have a rear main seal leaking, it would show. Like oil drops, and etc... but my car is always in the garage and I never see any spots on my garage floor. Do you think Honda is just trying to get some cash out of me since I'm getting a free transmission? Any help would be appreciated. THANKS in advance.

if your unsure about what to do i'd say tell them no for now, then take it to another place to get a quote and if they say its leaking just get it fixed there.

If the rear main is leaking...might as well have them do it while the transmission is out of the car. You take it somewhere else, and they will charge you for removing the transmission all over again. The trans has to be out to get to that seal.

I bet they F'd the rear main pulling the tranny out and they want you to pay for it. I'd get it replaced but dispute the charge with Honda corp.

That's actually not possible. Aside from removing the trans, you also have to remove the flex plate (flywheel) from the crankshaft itself before you can replace the rear main seal. If the job is a simple transmission replacement, there's no reason at all to remove the flywheel, and even THAT wouldn't damage the seal.

no, accordvtec77 is exactly correct, i would say replace it while the transmission is out, it will cost a lot later to do. what kind of labor are they charging you for this? it should not be that back and the seal should only be any more than $50.

Just when you think your screwing them, their screwing you :joshers:

Its highly unlikely that your 2k accord engine already needs a rear main seal. Unless, you engine is a lemon. although, its alot of work to replace it so,now would be the time to do it to save you on having to pay for pulling the tranny out again later down the road. They probaly want to replace it to be on the safe side and just told you it needs one because the don't wanna pay for it. So,yes, they're screwing you. I work at a auto shop and we do this to people all the time.
let me give you an example, I do collision work and on every car we work on we charge to replace emblems and moldings or anything that is held on with double side tape, that we take off before fixing ther area. reason, because 9 out or 10 times they will fall back off down the road and we will have to buy new ones anyway and lose money. Not because the moldings and emblems can't be retaped and remounted after car is painted but, because most people are lazy and won't take the time or effort to retape the emblem and moldings correctly. so,basically they are covering their ass's a head of time but,at your expense.

The seal was most likely not damaged when the tranny was being pulled. Also, with the tranny out, it takes ten minutes to change the seal.

Wow thanks for all the help guys. I just took my car in on Friday and the next day(Sat) they called me, but I was at work, so I didn't get a chance to pick up, so they left a message. Too bad they're closed today, but I sure will be asking alot of questions b/c this sounds fishy. Damn Honda dealerships. They'll try to rape you of every penny you have. I'll keep you guys updated.
