Default I smell something burning...

I smell something burning...

1) Thru heater vents while sitting at long stop lights.

2) In my garage after turning off engine and walking beside car to go into kitchen.

I don't see any fluid leaking on exhaust pipes.

I don't see any smoke.

I can't determine exact location of smell. Just under hood -- somewhere?

Any ideas?

Slipping timing belt?

Slipping serpentine belt?

Well I got a 93 accord ex to, but stick.
Well I think I smell something burning in the vents too, and when I get out!
Here is a list you should check into!
1.) Is there anything stuck to the exhast system!

2.) Is there any brake fluid leaking, look under the hood there should be a container beside the fues box (abs system only) that should be field to the max line, also look on the other side of the car you should see the actual brake fluid container field to max line. If not field get that checked! I think mine is leaking, but I put more brake fluid in both containers, and on mine the abs container was empty (that is why my abs light came on, but it is not anymore).

3.) It could be some kind of oil leak, transmition leak, there are many things besides that that could smell!

Maybe its just a 93 thing (I don't think so)!

Hope that helps!

when i changed oil and the oil filter, since the oil filter is directly over the exhaust piping, oil dripped on there and it smelled like oil for a couple hundred miles until it finally burnt off. dont know if this helps or not.

"1.) Is there anything stuck to the exhast system!"

"check under your car you could have gone over a plastic bag"

"when i changed oil and the oil filter, since the oil filter is directly over the exhaust piping, oil dripped on there "

I just changed the oil last weekend. I was hoping that I would find something dripping on the exhaust. Exhaust system is fine.

I have no fluid leaks on the garage floor.

"2.) Is there any brake fluid leaking,"

It is possible. I will take a closer look.

I checked the ATF dipstick. ATF fluid nice and pink.

I checked brakes. I do not have a stuck caliper nor emergency brake cable.

It could be burnt-up cooling fan on radiator. It could be old anti-freeze.

Whatever it was, the smell has gone away now that the weather is above 35 degrees.

You might have a minor oil leak that is dripping onto parts under the hood and causing the oil to burn off while you are driving which will come in through your vent when the car is stopped. I had the same problem a few months back.

Well, it's back.... something is still burning.

It smells electrical. I turned on my AC and take the car for a long drive. AC is working fine.

I pulled my car into my garage and there was that nasty smell. This time, I turned off my garage lights and searched under my car with my flash light.

I found cigarette-like smoke near passenger's side front bumper -- underneath the battery. What is electrical underneath the battery? Could this problem be the battery ground wire?

Do you hear any noise when your turning?

First, when brake fluid burns, it produces a white smoke and has a very acrid smell.

In front of and under the battery area is the headlight wiring harness and blinker/parking light wiring. If you have an aftermarket Plasma/Lazer/Bling Blue headlights (example: the ones with Japanese written all over the package that you get on eBay or your local tuner shop), they can cause the headlight wiring harness to burn up, creating a burning electrical wire smell and smoke. They are something like 80 or 100 watts instead of the 55 watts (I think) of the regular OEM style headlights. The increased wattage can fry the wiring harness. You may also have frayed insulation on one of the wires, causing something to heat up and/or melt, creating the smell and smoke.

Just a thought.

*quick edit* 9005 headlights that are modified/customized to fit 9006 sockets and harnesses could also burn out the headlight wiring harness.

Thanks for the ideas. I am running factory headlights. I'll check brake fluid level tomorrow.

The smoke is still going out the bottom of the car -- under the battery. I think that it's something electrical. I'll pull the splash pan and take a closer look tomorrow when I return home from work.
