I have an idea. If we all 5th gen owners have the issue we could sign a letter and see if Honda will do a recall on them.

I am making a new post so everyone sign it if you have the issue.

Default Not the VSS after all...

I just took my car in to the dealership and had them look at the speedo problem. Turns out the VSS is fine; the speedo is what's broken. They said it's common in 94s to have the speedo crap out, and that the VSS is usually not the problem. The part is $280, and labor another $300. They said it takes two days to calibrate it. I didn't have them do it, but I thought you might want to take another look at yours if you haven't checked the VSS to see if it works or not.

Its been cold and snowing, once a little warmer weather hits I am checking the VSS. The other thread is probably lost somewhere, I'll do a search and bump it. Again if the speedo is a common issue in 94s Honda outta replace it. Oh well I know what gear/rpm is what speed. Mine craps out every once in a while and thats when I do the old 3rd gear 2300 = 25 mph thing.

I had this exact same problem in my 96LX, it worked intermittently for about 3 months before finally dying.

I had it at the dealer for something else and they took a look at it. Apparrently it is common for the damn speedo itself to go bad in the 94-97s

I think the part from honda was about $150 and another $150 to put it in, so I went to the junkyard and got a dash from a 97 Acura CL(4cyl) and swapped in the speedo and tach from it. Cost me $60 at the junk yard and the gauge faces from the CL are so much nicer to look at.

If you want to verify if it is the VSS or the speedo, u can hookup a ODB tool and watch the speed when you drive down the road. There is an off chance that it could be a broken wire, but not likely.
