Default Your not suposed to skip gears?

While searchin the forums i ran into somone saying that skipping gears is bad for your syncros...

When im drivin hard, and staying under the speed limits...or trying i will ride 2nd gear to about 5k RPM's and shift right to 5th since im now at the 50 MPH speed limit...

Is this bad on my tranny???

hmmm

i'm not sure but it makes some sense
since you're shifting from such a high rpm to a low rpm its probably not as good on your synchros as shifting to same range rpms is
maybe they just wear out faster that way? i'm not sure

uh... shouldn't matter (but then again, i'm no mechanic). i think as long as the rpm's match, it should be a problem. say don't be dumping the clutch at 5k rpm to shift into 5th. let the rpm's drop to 2300 first.

yeah when i do that i dont shift fast, theres no need to hurry up and get to 5th...I can kinda see how it may be ahrd since one end was spinning and now the other end is, but it really doesnt make sence that it would casue damage, unless as you said dumping the clutch at 5k in 5th and making the everything spin down to 1800 in half a second...

But i was wondering cuz i dont want to go to 3rd, not accelerate, 4th, not accelerate, and then to 5th, seems pointless UNLESS i were to just run through the gears, not engaging any of them, on my way to 5th, maybe i should do that?

Reason to skip gears on an up shift?

simple save gas.

General Motors has managed to make the mighty vette fuel efficient by have the 1-4 skip feature. It will skip gears 2 and 3 if youre not accelerating hard. It is an annoying feature if your sorta driving hard but not really...but the principle is you keep the revs down and reduce fuel consumption.
