Timing stays retarded, 1.5
Hello, I'm a new member here, would like to see if anyone has an idea what the problem is with this 1993 Civic D15Z1 w/5 speed. I'm a first year auto tech, and this problem has me stumped.
The car came in with a blown head gasket and was subjected to severe overheating due to the desert heat and running with low coolant. Repairing the mechanical problems went uneventfully, but the timing will not advance and is retarded at idle. The cams are timed properly, the cam position sensor checks out, the distributor is installed correctly, yet this problem persist.
I'm leaning toward the computer, but since a good one is not available to swap out and confirm, thought I'll float this one here first.
Thanks
Bruce

if you think it's the computer you can probably locate a computer on ebay for a relatively cheap price.
or www.thepartstrader.com kinda sketchy but you won't pay much for the ecu and you just gotta be careful...

timing
Hello Bruce
Brett
- I have a 1995 honda civic sedan with a 1.5 engine and me and another technician figure out that if you set the cam up to the right one tooth it will put the engine in the correct timing. I know you probably think im crazy but it is a manufacturing default. If that doesn't work try to advance the timing belt the other way. It has been several years now. I just remembered how frustrated we were to find out that the timing was retarded by a certain degree.

on that engine, the crankgear (behind the pully) has a little notch in it that is really hard to find but it's there. That is #1 TDC. Then the cam gear needs to line up with the little marks on the timing belt back cover. These marks are NOT the same as lining the gear up with the head top. It's close to the head top but turned just counter clockwise from level. Maybe the belt is off a notch and not lined up as I described.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think the D15Z1 is fairly unique like this. I just worked on mine last week.
