Jack and Jack stands
If your car is lowered I used to use 2" boards to drive up on. Just enough to get a Craftsman jack under.
OR You can get this jack:

Fits under my car with no problems. And highest seat height is 20" in 3-5 pumps
Weighs 34lbs.

To answer your original question, your jack is either too short or your stands too high. If you don't want to buy a new jack or stands, flappy188's instructions are excellent.
The only problem is that it takes extra time and I'm impatient...so I bought the jack that Bumnah posted.

The best compromise IMO is to get a regular hydraulic jack with at least a 20" max height for under $100 and drive up on 2x4s like CivicSiRacer said.
