Default Rust Repair?

Well I did make a decision, I'm gonna keep my hatch. I figure your only young (and stupid) once. But I really gotta fix the rust on my rear quater panels. My dad (who has been a drywall contractor for over 25 years and owns his own company) says he can do it for me. He's done it before he says.

However welding in new metal would be difficult for us. So he said he'll use a combo of fiberglass and bondo to do it and it'll look perfect. Bakeoff told me over AIM last night that even if I did weld metal I'd have to bondo to get the welds all nice and smooth.

So is a fiberglass/bondo combo the best way to do the rust on my quater panels?

I just know the basics, but you are going to have to cut all of the rust out. then follow by welding some metal in its place. then you can use the bondo and fiberglass to smooth everything out.

Not sure if thats what you said, if it is.... sorry

I'm not welding metal in their but rather grind the rust done and using fiberglass and bondo to patch it up. Is this a good idea or not?

The welding metal way is better, but You can do it just by filling with bondo. Just make sure you get all the rust off, and a little more. seal up the bare metal then proceed with the bondo. If you dont get all the old stuff off, it will just come back

I've heard that with fiberglass and bondo, the rust will come back MUCH easier than with welding new sheet metal.

I did it this way. The rust comes back. You'll need to weld in some new metal if you want it done right

this is kinda off topic and it kinda isn't but to keep the rust from coming back there is this paint you can paint over existing rust or put it on there to prevent it in the first place. I saw it on Tnn's Trucks of all places. I can't remeber what its called but if you try thier website you can find its name. Hope tht helps someone

You have to cut and weld.. and make sure everylast bit of rust is gone.. not even the slightest bit left.. or you will see rust back within a few months..
and bondo is crap.. it retains water and will cause more rust..

and you dont need to use any bondo on the welds.. you grind the welds down and smoth them out.. and if its just minor imperfections use primer and lots of sanding.. if you must use body filler, use fiberglass..
