Default Brake calipers

i was wondering if anyone knew how much it would cost to buy new calipers and new drums and paint them black? the stock ones that are on there are all rusty and look like ****. i jsut want to make them look respectable.

Or, how hard would it be to paint the ones that are on there now, how would i clean them, etc?

Or, how much would it cost, and how hard is it to do the GSR four disk conversion?

thanx

It's not hard to clean them. Much easier than replacing them entirely. Use Simple Green or something similar and wash and scrub them clean. Then proceed with sanding paper and after you are ready to paint. Remember to use HIGH temperature paint for the calipers.

tape off everything that shouldn't be painted, like all rubber surfaces/joints, your rotors, brake lines..... newspaper and maskingtape.

Yep, it's pretty easy.

Easy to paint. Start with the drums, they're easier.

Just remember to sand and clean them WELL before you paint. If you paint over dirt, it ain't gonna stick. I'd sand them with a very coarse paper (or even wire) to get off major rust. Then sand with a finer paper. Wipe them down with a wet rag when you're done (to get the dust off), let them dry, and you're ready to paint. I'd put some tape over the wheel studs, and between the drum and the backplate so it doesn't get sticky, then just spray away!

I spent about a day doing my drums, cause I wanted to make sure I did a really good job sanding and cleaning. That was two summers ago, and they still look like brand new black.

Calipers are the same. They're just harder to sand because of the shape, and there's more to mask off while you spray.

Good luck!!

wear safety goggles and use a can or two of brake cleaning fluid and get a few still metal brushes.

It just take elbow grease Simple green is a good idea too.

After painting allow about 24 hours before driving or the brake dust will get embedded in the paint!

Also when applying the paint use a sponge instead of spraying. That way you can dab the paint on (much more control). Just spray the paint into a small container and let it sit for about 30second before applying. This also reduces the drying time and allow you to put the second/third/forth coat on faster. Do about 3 coats min. I did 4 coats. The first coat wont cover much but by 3rd it will be fine.

I painted my GTI VR6 caliper this way and it took me the 1/2day to paint but after 6 years they still look great.

Was looking to do the same on my civic. Planned on buying new calipers(because there clean) and having them powder coated. To gut the pistion out and have them coated localy would run me about $150. If your going to spend the money and buy new calipers, you might as well do it right.

The cool thing about powder coating is you can do it any color. My plan was a black wheel, polished lip, metallic orange calipres. White and black trim car. The orange would be the only color on the car.
