hey jerks. i get 32.5 city and 38.5-39.25 highway depending on like you said traffic and hills. and i DON"T do any goofy things like shutting the car off or anything like that.

10:1 compression, 10lbs of boost and self tuned.

^ I've always believed that more power is actually better for fuel economy than less power.

Part of the reason my VX never did as well as others is because you had to rev the piss out of it in order to keep up with traffic here at high altitude. A weak motor getting beaten on at 100% will get way worse mileage than a big, powerful motor cruising at 15%.

I'm throwing a b20 into my civic and I'm confident I'll get better mileage on average than I ever did with the d15z1 (keeping in mind most of my miles are city and it's hilly around here). Running 85 octane will be a plus too h:

:edit: and :chuckles: at "hey jerks"

haha yeah it's true. i barely have to feather the throttle and my fast spooling snail kicks in and away it goes. i don't race on the streets really so most is just casual driving, shift at 3.5K. a few romps here and there.

btw, the basics of my setup:
y7/y8 mini
wrx turbo(td04l-13t)
ramhorn
jrc 5"
450's
2.5" dp, 3" exhaust
clutch specialties stg2, act 12lb
rebuilt y8 tranny
crome+freelog+ostrich+lc1
93 octane

stock 97 ex sedan here
with the cel on (so no vtec), and the motor running like shit i still get 28-30 mpg no matter how hard i drive
when it was running well and i drove nicely i got 32-34 mpg, but never any better than that

slightly off topic, watched the vid of the m3 vs prius around a test track, prius was driven balls out, m3 just kept up behind it, m3 got better mpg

definitely something to think about

When I got 40-50mpg on my 91 Civic Si I was coming home from State College (all highway), pumped up my air pressures to 40psi and only had my tool box and tub with autocross gear in it. Car had no a/c, racing seats, cat back exhaust, 00 Civic Si cold air intake, header, pulleys, and racing suspension. I kept my speed around 65-70mph the whole way.

My windows were open the whole way too since I had no a/c and it wad fricking hot that day.

I get 34-36 pretty regularly in the city, and 42 or so on the highway. I have another of the same car, but automatic. The auto gets only 24-26 city, and struggles to best 32mpg on the highway. The auto has 88,000kms on it, the 5M has over 280,000kms. Both cars are 1.6EL's, with D16Y8 engines.

Real glad to hear from you guys running boost, I always figured there had to be a relation between horsepower and mpg depending on the efficency of your engine. At what point does the efficency of the engine start to suffer in the name of performance? If you can gain a couple miles per gallon and substantial power gains from a minimal investment like a turbo, sounds like a no brainer. What are the drawbacks? Two sides to every coin right?

It all depends on your setup. I'm sure some guys have pieced together a turbo setup that shot their mileage to hell. I also know of a guy here in CO with a built and boosted b-series EG capable of close to 700hp when set up for the track, but he got killer mileage on his street setup because he never even got the turbo spinning.

Also, my buddies drive hopped-up saabs that make around 250-300whp and 350+ wtq but get close to 40mpg when they're babying it on the highway (partially by virtue of tall gearing).

I don't think there is any formula for success, and I also don't think adding a trubo system to your car with the goal of saving gas is remotely practical, or even likely to work. Think about it this way: you spend $1,000 piecing together your system, and if you're lucky it might save you a couple gallons a month (if you're unlucky it could cost you much more). It would take an awful long time to recover $1,000 at a rate of $8/month. h:

my old integra used to get around 21-23mpg 75/25% city/highway boosting 7-8 psi with me driving like an ass.

if i stayed out of it, the mileage was pretty darn close to what it was stock, which was around 27-32mpg just like any other stock LS integra.
