Default Brake Noise

I have a 93 Si and whenever i break i hear weird noise in the back of my car sounds like the brakes...it sounds like if you put some rocks in a coffee can and rolled it around...its hard to explain...gimme some help

Need more info.. .when does it happen?
How long ago did you change your pads/clean your brakes?

it happens usually when im braking from a slower speed like 20 -25 mphs...and i think it is rocks in the breaks because i havent cleaned them but still not sure

congratulations, youve wore your shoes down to the point that htye are now writing their names on the inside of your drums.

you get to buy new drums now :thumbup:

I had that noise in my brakes, it hought it was the drum's, it turned out to be a big pile of brake dust. i took them off and blew them out and there still fine. may be diffrent in your case.

yeah, that sometimes works, you can get a can of aerosol brake cleaner and probably take care of it...

but that graveling noise is usually metal on metal components.

If you did put a groove in your drums, you can get them turned (depending on how much of the drum surface is left)

I suggest cleaning them out and looking at how much pad you have left.

is there an accurate way to measure pad life? i always guess and i get screwed.

I put new shoes on the back of my LX last year, and ever since I did, it makes a grinding sound when I stop. I don't know why. I've pulled them apart numerous times to check and recheck them and haven't seen anything that makes sense. I used genuine Honda pads too. They are wearing fine and don't cause any problems other than noise. Just luck I guess.

As far as measuring pad life. That's really hard to judge. It's dependent on how often you stop, and how hard you stop. Usually I just do the rear ones the same time as I do the front ones. This is of course on a car with rear drums. With rear disk, you should have an indicator scraper that makes noise when they need to be replaced.
