yeah, that sometimes works, you can get a can of aerosol brake cleaner and probably take care of it...
but that graveling noise is usually metal on metal components.
If you did put a groove in your drums, you can get them turned (depending on how much of the drum surface is left)
I suggest cleaning them out and looking at how much pad you have left.
