civic timing tune up
if 140k+ miles on a honda is good then i must be doing great. im reaching the 104k mark and mine is still running like a champ. but would it be a good idea to change the timing belt? and if so, how hard is it, cuz like Mikhsoj, i really dont have the money to fork out to take it to a shop
Well, i know someone that went over 200,000 miles on the original timing belt and nothing happened. I would never tell someone to do that, it's always a risk when over 100,000 on timing belts. My father is an engineer at Honda and he changes his belts at 90,000 miles no matter how well his are driving at the time. He went 270,000 on his Accord b4 selling it and it was still purring. He has 170,000 on my mothers 01 accord v6 and it runs like most cars with 20,000 on em. He now has an 08 accord 4 banger, nice ride.
As for the timing belt being done yourself? the only thing i would suggest is to take it to a shop, or better yet, the dealer and have them loosen the main shaft bolt. Mine wouldn't come off and two shops later i had to take it to the dealer to get it off cuz the shops thought they would break it after torquing on it too much. It didn't budge for them. So the dealer would be responsible for it if it broke. Breaking that bold is a bad thing from what i hear.

If you have to ask how hard it is you probably shouldn't do it yourself. I take maintenance on my vehicles very seriously, so I ask you this, how many times have you heard someone say that there car was running great and then...
Go to honda and get a new belt, i bought one of those all included kits and the belt from there is just hanging on the wall now. The oem honda one was only 20-30bucks. Everyone is going to recomend an oem one so i just went ahead and did it, bent valves suck!
And its really pretty easy to change the belt. You probly will want to get a new water pump while you're at it, since you'll have the belt off.
i'D say one of the most dif parts of the change is getting the crank shaft pulley bolt loose, so make sure you order that tool off amazon for that, have a breaker bar and some impact wrench extentions for about a 15inch extention and a jack stand for holding up your car.
I tried my impact wrench to loosen it first but that wont work.

Use some 'white-out' to mark your belt and make sure that your crank shaft gear and cam gear are sinked up before you complete the job!
