Default civic timing tune up

sup civic guys, just got myself a civic, and i'm going through it. the timing belt was never done, and it's got 118k miles on it.

anyone have any experience with this kit? it's a good deal, but not sure if it's junk.

thanks everyone!

The timing on my civic hasn't been changed and i have 138k miles on it. how many miles do you think it can take until it gives in?

it varies from car to car and there is no exact time when is going to happen... dats my knowledge and understanding on the timing belt!

all i know that the recommended manufacturers' mileage on civics is 105k!!

and for pete, consider yourself lucky you have gone that far (140k, thats a pretty long time)!!

the timing belt is the most important tune up that the car needs, it is the life of the engine...those were the words of a mechanic that i know!!

I've been wanting to get it but I've been tight on money. I guess I better get it before I end up replacing the entire engine.

To my understanding and knowledge honda uses interference engines...if the timing belt goes... you have to replace the motor completely!!

well im pretty sure that depends on how comfortable you are with the car...

if you think you are up to the challenge...i dont see why not!

I myself took my car to the mechanic...even though i do almost everything else to my car ...i prefer not take the risk and just lay down the $200-$300 charge for labor!!

if 140k+ miles on a honda is good then i must be doing great. im reaching the 104k mark and mine is still running like a champ. but would it be a good idea to change the timing belt? and if so, how hard is it, cuz like Mikhsoj, i really dont have the money to fork out to take it to a shop

Lets just put it this way, if you mess it up, it will cost you alot more, its not that hard as long as you have the tools, but if you dont do it right you can mess it up badly. And as far as buying a belt, get the best you can. I have nothing against Ebay, I buy everything else from there, my body kit, lights, cold air, headers, intake manifold, but not a belt. I had a friend do his own with a cheap belt, and 2 months later the belt gave, and his girl kept trying to start the car, and it ended up costing him $1,800 to get the top end sent to a shop to get fixed. Oh and yes Hondas are GREAT cars, I just paid cash for a 96 dx that had 150,000 miles on it, and $200 later this car runs like new, i can do 110 mph on the way to work and the car doesnt make a sound.
